In an attempt to decongest the busy stretch between Mahavir Chowk and Rajiv Chowk, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has decided to widen the 1.5-kilometre road.

For the purpose, the MCG will dismantle boundary walls at several places between the two ends. “We are likely to start dismantling of a wall along Police Line between Mahavir Chowk and Civil Hospital. We will also remove boundary walls around the PWD rest house, near More Chowk and elsewhere,” said Rajesh Bansal, executive engineer, MCG.

“The widening of the road will help manage the traffic between Rajiv Chowk and Mahavir Chowk, which is very congested and causes heavy traffic jams at several places,” said Bansal.

The MCG and the traffic police had held a meeting to discuss the plans on decongesting the stretch. The move will help commuters of old city areas.

Civil Hospital, MCG’s old office, PWD office-cum-rest house, Shama Restaurant, dharamshalas, religious sites, Kamla Nehru Park and several other premises are located along the stretch, which runs in a zigzag shape via Sadar Bazar.

The MCG earlier had planned a flyover on the stretch and a private consultant had prepared its feasibility report. “The idea behind flyover was to separate the local traffic from the main traffic. But RITES, the central government consultant, scrapped the flyover plan,” the executive engineer said.
