A study at Heriot-Watt University shows different types of clothes affect the appearance of a woman.

Most women are very particular about the type of clothes they wear. However, one of the most common complaints that women have is that their clothes sometimes make their rears look large and disproportionate.

Now, experts from Heriot-Watt University's School of Textiles and Design are launching what is thought to be the world's first ever scientific study about how different types of clothes affect the appearance of a woman.

As part of the study, the researchers will be photographing the rears of female volunteers wearing hundreds of different types of clothing to determine how designs, colours, patterns and fabric types all combine to affect perception of the size of a woman's bottom.

According to Dr Lisa Macintyre, lead researcher, the detailed study would not only help women to make most of their natural assets, but will also help to lift self-esteem, as it was generally accepted that enhancing body perception can have a positive effect on the confidence and self-esteem of people.

"There's much discussion in the media of clothing styles that flatter the body and it's generally accepted that enhancing body perception can improve confidence and self-esteem. But the factors behind this have never been fully investigated in a proper scientific manner.

This study will provide for the first time detailed and usable information that would enable designers to make the clothes that help women make the most of their natural assets," The Independent quoted her, as saying.
