Avengers Endgame breaks this record before release, emerges as longest modern superhero film
Avengers: Endgame is not only the longest Marvel movie ever made - it’s 30 minutes longer than Infinity War - it is also the longest theatrically released modern superhero film.Updated: Mar 26, 2019 11:17 IST
We’ve always known that Avengers: Endgame would be a long movie - perhaps even the longest Marvel movie - but we didn’t know exactly how long it’ll actually be - until now. The official AMC Theatres website has seemingly confirmed unsubstantiated reports that were doing the rounds over the weekend that the film will clock in at 182 minutes (that’s three hours and two minutes).
This runtime makes Endgame not only the longest MCU movie by far - the record was previously held by Avengers: Infinity War - but also the longest (theatrical) modern superhero movie. The news has since been confirmed by online ticketing site Fandango. Infinity War clocked in at 149 minutes, the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ran three hours and three minutes long, while the Ultimate Cut of Watchmen (also by director Zack Snyder) ran more than three-and-a-half hours long.
Directors Joe & Anthony Russo have long maintained that the film will be around three hours long. “This is a culmination film of 22 movies, it’s a lot of storytelling to work into it. Emotion is an intrinsic part of that to us,” the Russos told Collider recently. “When you have to tell a really complicated story and you want strong emotional moments with the characters, it just requires a certain amount of real estate. This one, in particular, feels like three hours worth of real estate.” The Russos said that a nearly complete cut of the film was hanging around the ‘three-hour mark’ in February.
Marvel president Kevin Feige has stressed that the studio doesn’t believe in mandating runtimes. He told Collider, “We’re gonna release the movie at the exact right running time. I’m telling you this, it’s gonna be perfect. It’s gonna be the exact running time that the movie needs to be.”
He continued, “In all seriousness, we don’t look at run times in terms of mandates, or anything like that. Every movie should feel like it’s an hour and 45 minutes. Now, some movies can be 90 minutes and feel like they’re four hours. And some movies can be three and a half hours and feel like 90 minutes. So for us, that’s what it…It’s, ‘how does it feel?’ And every version of ‘Endgame’ thus far, and the ones that we’re honing in on, feel very good.”
Endgame stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and others. The film is slated for an April 26 release.
