Avengers Infinity War directors delete social media posts, except one tweet. It concerns Deadpool

In a mass purging of their social media accounts, directors of Avengers: Infinity War - Joe & Anthony Russo - have deleted all but one tweet. It concerns Deadpool. What does this mean?

The sibling director duo behind Avengers: Infinity War - Joe and Anthony Russo - have deleted their entire social media presence - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - save for one post, about which Deadpool will be very pleased.

Could the Marvel Cinematic Universe and X-Men universes collide?

The only tweet that has survived this mass purge, which includes a display picture change, is the Russos’ May 10 reply to a tweet by Ryan Reynolds. In the Russos’ tweet, we can see Thanos’ Infinity Gauntlet flipping a bird. “Boom,” the brothers wrote alongside the picture.

The Russo Brothers were very active on social media ahead of the release of Infinity War, the 19th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the weeks leading up to the film’s April 27 release, the brothers shared frequent updates, fan art, and news. In one post, they even wrote a letter to Marvel fans, urging them to not spoil the film once they’d seen it.

Deadpool 2, which arrived in theatres a few weeks, took a leaf out of Avengers’ book in its marketing. In a mirror of the Russos’ letter, Wade Wilson wrote one of his own, replacing the ‘Thanos demands your silence’ hashtag with a characteristically tongue-in-cheek ‘#WadeWilsonDemandsYourSisterSorryStupidAutocorrectsilence’.

Besides cleaning the slate for whatever promotions the brothers have planned for Avengers 4, the Russos’ letter has further fuelled the speculation started a few days ago by Reynolds, when he asked Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn if the two franchises could crossover. “Yes, please,” replied Gunn.

The chances of a Deadpool-MCU crossover isn’t as far-fetched as it sounds. Once Disney’s $50 billion takeover of Fox - the studio that currently owns the rights to the X-Men, and Deadpool - goes through, the Mouse House will have an entire universe of new characters available to explore.

Disney chief Bob Iger had recently told investors that 2019’s Avengers 4 would be a ‘significant conclusion’ for the MCU as we know it, and that the studio was already planning to introduce new characters who could continue the franchise. “There’s certainly a lot more stories to tell, a lot more characters to populate those stories with,” he said.

“(The deal) provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love,” Disney had said.

Both Deadpool 2 and Infinity War have been massively successful at the box office. Even though it is trailing the first film, Deadpool 2’s $500 million gross is a substantial figure for an R-rated film, and it is likely to increase in the coming weeks. Infinity War, meanwhile, is on the cusp of cracking the $2 billion mark, a milestone that only three films - Titanic, Avatar, Star Wars: The Force Awakens - have crossed in history.
