Universal Pictures has announced that the next installment of the Fast and Furious series will be opening on April 10, 2020- about a year after its initial release date.
The ninth film was originally scheduled to debut April 19, 2019.
The official Fast and Furious Twitter and Instagram accounts announced the news on Wednesday.
The studio, however, has provided no official reason for the move.
The Fate of the Furious, the franchise’s eighth installment, earned $1.2 billion earlier in 2017. It was directed by F Gary Gray and starred Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson among others. However, it is unclear if Johnson is returning for the ninth film, after reports emerged that his character would be getting a spinoff series of his own, with Jason Statham as co-star.
The Rock’s future, and his rumoured feud with Diesel, were the subject of a recent Instagram tirade by Tyrese Gibson, who was imploring the Rock that he return for more films, instead of choosing to do the spinoffs.
