The sequel to the highly successful The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has begun its shoot in Jaipur. Richard Gere, David Strathairn and Tamsin Greig have been added to the cast of the film, titled The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 2.

John Madden (remember his beautiful Shakespeare in Love and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin) will direct the sequel as well that will retain its original cast of Dev Patel, Lillete Dubey, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Celia Imrie, Ronald Pickup, Penelope Wilton, Diana Hardcastle and Tena Desae.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel surprised many when it grossed $ 135 million across the world in 2012. Incidentally, this is the first ever time that Fox Searchlight is producing a sequel; the house was also involved with the original.

“This movie presented us with an irresistible opportunity: to continue a story we realized we had only just begun,” Madden said recently. “Not to tell the same story again, but to pursue where the lives of these very different characters lead, with an audience which already holds them in great affection.”

The 2012 film was written by Ol Parker and was based on a 2004 novel called These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach. The story focusses on a delightfully motley group of British pensioners which arrives in an Indian hotel in Rajasthan that is run by the young, never-say-die Sony, essayed by the Slumdog Millionaire lad, Dev Patel.

Madden and Parker take us through the emotional upheavals of their characters: one is trying to find the lover he was forced to leave behind in his youth, one joins a club to find a partner, one gets over her racial prejudice after she sees the excellence in her doctor and maid, and in the midst of all these goings-on, Sony is struggling to keep together his dilapidated hotel and hold on to his girlfriend whom his mother strongly disapproves.

The sequel opens with Sony and one of the Britishers managing the now-renovated Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with it still firmly remaining a place for the elderly and the beautiful. There is one room that is still vacant, and this is where the characters portrayed by Gere and Greig are to step in.
