14-year-old girl seen crying, pleading as molesters try to strip her in Bihar’s Jehanabad

Police in Bihar’s Jehanabad district have booked eight unknown persons and detained a man after a video of a group of boys trying to strip a 14-year-old girl went viral on social media, officials said on Monday.
Jehanabad’s superintendent of police Manish Kumar said he directed officials to lodge a first information report on Sunday morning soon after the viral video came to his notice. Kumar said a special investigation team (SIT) has also been set up to look for the accused.
“The FIR has been lodged against eight unknown people, including the motorcycle owner, on the basis of the written statement of police inspector Shyamsundar Singh of the city police station. The accused are being searched on the basis of the video,” he added.
The video shows a group about seven boys, some of them on a motorcycle, trying to tear up the clothes of the girl. She is seen crying and begging with folded hands as boys use abusive and derogatory language against her.
The incident reportedly took place on Saturday near Bharthua village of Jehanabad district.
A police officer, who is part of the probe team, said they noticed the video that went viral late on Saturday night during a routine monitoring of social media.
“We gathered the information about the incident on Sunday morning and identified the youths involved in the incident,” the police officer said.
“It was also noticed that a youth was making a video of the incident. At the place of occurrence, a motorcycle was also there. Police have identified the owner of the motorcycle. A youth has been detained in this case,” he added.
It is the latest incident in a series of crimes against women and girls reported in the state.
The gender vulnerability index, released by the Union ministry of women and child development last year, rated Bihar as the most unsafe state for women with lowest access to education and protection in comparison to other states.
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data for 2017 shows that 13,400 cases of crime against women were recorded in Bihar.
