After BJP retains 4 states, Tripura, Karnataka chief ministers confident of 2023
Last year, B.S Yediyurappa was replaced by Bommai in a series of unanticipated events.
There's no anti-incumbency after all - this was the BJP's message after it retained four states - Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa - on Thursday as Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that the 2022 assembly polls' results have set the tone ahead of the 2024 national elections. With Karnataka and Tripura set to vote next year, the chief ministers of the two states are more confident than before, it seems.
"We have resolved to see the Lotus bloom and win the 2023 assembly election by winning the hearts of the people throug the public welfare programmes of our government and organisational strength of the BJP. We have taken a pledge to build a prosperous state by returning to power for the next five years. We will undertake a state tour with our senior leader BS Yediyurappa and central leaders to further strengthen the party in every part of the State. We are already on the job," Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.
Karnataka has been a witness of turbulence in the political landscape in the last few years, starting with collapse of the Congress government in 2019. Last year, B.S Yediyurappa was replaced by Bommai in a series of unanticipated events. "Congress has sunk in the rest of the country. It will sink in Karnataka too. Congress is fighting for survival," Bommai said on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Tripura is also gearing up up the state elections. Chief minister Biplab Deb was quoted as saying in reports on Thursday that he was confident of the BJP's return to power next year. On the state polls results, Deb on Thursday said - "It is an acknowledgement of the work being done under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi."
Earlier this week, when Home Minister Amit Shah was in Agartala, he said "I assure you that we have managed Tripura well in these 4 years. After our 5 years completion next year, give us another chance and we will make Tripura number one state in the country".
Meghlaya and Nagaland are other states that will be voting next year.
On Thursday, the BJP retained UP with 273 of 403 seats, Uttarakhand with 47 of 70 seats, and Manipur with 32 of 60 seats. In Goa, the party is one below the magic number of 21 but has a plan in place to form the government.
