Cyclone Dana highlights: Severe cyclonic storm 'Dana' commenced its landfall on Odisha's coast on Friday around 12.10 am. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the landfall will continue into the early hours of Friday, with wind speeds of 100-110 km/h, expected to reach nearly 120 km/h. Various parts of the state experienced heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions. Additionally, an ‘orange warning’ (be prepared to take action) has been issued for five districts, including Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, and Dhenkanal, for heavy rain during this period.
Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who reviewed the state government's preparedness, said that only 30 per cent of the people, or around 3-4 lakh people living in the identified 'danger zone', have been evacuated by Wednesday evening.

How are the preparations?
- With Cyclone Dana nearing the Odisha coast, authorities have advised devotees to avoid visiting the Jagannath temple in Puri. Preparations to protect the 12th-century shrine are being expedited to minimise the cyclone's impact. Puri District Collector Siddharth S Swain said that devotees, including those observing the month-long ‘Kartik Brata’ ritual, should refrain from visiting the temple as a safety precaution.
- The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has launched awareness campaigns in Odisha districts such as Mahakalpada and Kendrapara, going door-to-door and using loudspeakers to inform people about Cyclone Dana's approaching.
- The coastal regions of Odisha witnessed heavy rainfall and strong winds on Thursday morning, while sea conditions stayed rough as Cyclone ‘Dana’ moved closer to the state’s coastline.

Cyclone Dana live updates: Kolkata airport suspends flight operations
The Kolkata airport authorities decided to suspend flight operations for 15 hours from 6 pm on Thursday in view of the possible impact of cyclone Dana, an official said.
The step was taken keeping in mind the safety of passengers, airline employees, various equipment, navigational aids and infrastructure, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) official said on Wednesday. (PTI)

West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose said, "We are now in a moment of crisis. Cyclone Dana is nearing, but we in Bengal have braved many storms and will face it with confidence and fortitude."
“Bengal will stand together and we shall overcome. My dear brothers and sisters, please follow all instructions issued by the government and disaster management authority. Please follow dos and don'ts prescribed by them. All the disaster management machinery of the state government and the Government of India are kept well-oiled and fighting fit,” he added.

According to IMD sources, wind velocity in the districts of Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore would be 100-110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, along with extremely heavy rainfall and tidal surge during the landfall which will take around four to five hours. (PTI)

IMD said that the landfall process of Cyclone Dana is set to commence from tonight October 24, and extend till the early hours of October 25. The landfall will bring heightened wind speeds and very heavy rains to Odisha and West Bengal.
