First posting, WhatsApp chats: Trainee IPS officer in midst of ₹1-crore bribe allegations in cyber fraud case

In his first field posting in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, 2022-batch trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Rahul Bansal has found himself at the centre of an alleged ₹1 crore corruption case.

Along with Bansal, who is posted as as a city superintendent of police, assistant sub-inspector Praveen Kumar Rathore and constable Anshul Sharma have been accused of demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹1 crore to cover up a cyber fraud case, according to a report by Live Hindustan.

Who is Rahul Bansal?

According to the complaint, Rahul Bansal was working as an Income Tax Inspector before joining the IPS. After completing his IPS training, he was posted as a CSP officer in Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, which was his first field posting.

During his posting in Chhattisgarh, bribery allegations surfaced.

Digital evidence and special CBI court

The matter reached a Special CBI Court in Delhi, which has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Director General of Police (DGP) of Chhattisgarh and the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Meanwhile, the complaint alleged that ₹1 crore bribe was not paid in a single transaction. Instead, it was claimed the payoff was made through hawala channels in two equal instalments of ₹50 lakh during May 2026.

According to the report, the complainant has submitted digital evidence including WhatsApp chats and call recordings.

Special CBI court demands action

Taking note of the digital evidence submitted, the Special CBI court has sought a detailed ATR.

The ATR is expected to detail what action has been taken against the accused officials since the complaint was received.

Sales Tax Assistant Commissioner arrested entangled in bribe case

In another case, the Navi Mumbai Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested a senior Sales Tax official for allegedly demanding ₹8 lakh bribe from a scrap trader to close a Goods and Services Tax (GST) inquiry, according to a PTI report.

The accused, identified as Deepak Ramchandra Kshirsagar, 56, was serving as Assistant Commissioner of Sales Tax, Raigad Division, CBD Belapur, at the time of the offense.
