The development comes a day after Hindustan Times highlighted that the Rio-bound delegation largely comprised people from non-sports background.

The HT report ‘Haryana spending Rs 1 crore on Vij-led Rio junket’, revealed that the delegation led by Vij, comprised two MLAs, media adviser to the chief minister, Vij’s private secretary and the private secretary to additional chief secretary (sports), who have nothing to do with sports. Except for joint director, sports, OP Sharma, a former national hockey player, nobody in the delegation had a sports background.

The sports department was to foot the bill.

The purpose behind the tour as cited in records was to encourage Haryana players in Rio and to promote sports.
