Union finance minister Arun Jaitley underwent a successful kidney transplant surgery on Monday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Jaitley, 65, was admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening.
He was moved to the operation theatre at 8 am on Monday morning, where a team of eight surgeons from AIIMS and Apollo Hospitals were part of the renal transplantation team led by Dr Sandeep Guleria from Apollo Hospitals.
Dr Sandeep Mahajan, head of nephrology at AIIMS, was a part of the operating team.
“The surgery was successful. Both recipient and donor are stable and recovering well,” the AIIMS said in a statement.
The minister had confirmed his illness on Twitter on April 6 after undergoing a battery of tests.
“I am being treated for kidney-related problems & certain infections that I have contracted,” Jaitley had tweeted last month.
Government sources said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Jaitley, hours before he underwent the kidney transplant. They said Modi was in touch with Jaitley’s family to get updates on his health throughout the day.
Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday too wished Jaitley a speedy recovery.
“I’m happy to hear that Jaitley ji’s kidney transplant surgery today at AIIMS went well. I wish him a speedy recovery,” Gandhi tweeted.
