On May 2, a police officer arrested a 20-year-old man on the charge of raping a 3-year-old girl in Gharsana (Sriganganagar) in northern Rajasthan. A day later, his daughter wrote him a letter to say that he should make sure the man gets death.

“I came to know today that a 3-year-old girl has been raped in Gharsana,” she began her May 3 letter. “When I heard about it, I felt sad and angry. Now I understand why mummy doesn’t let me go out alone,” wrote Nidhika Chauhan, who wrote her Class 12 exam recently and is awaiting result.

Chauhan’s father, Vikram Singh, is station house officer of Gharsana police station.

For work, he stays away from his family, which is based in Ganganagar, 150km from Gharsana. Singh visits them once a fortnight. But this time, his wife, Madhu, told him to not bother coming home.

She said, “I told him I will take care of the kids; you focus on the case.”

In the hand-written letter, which Chauhan sent to the police officer through WhatsApp, the 16-year-old wonders why people do such crimes.

“I find it strange how someone can do it with such a small child. He must be a monster,” she said over the telephone from Ganganagar.

“I was very sad and thought would pen down my thoughts,” she added.

Her mother, Madhu, is a Hindi teacher in a government senior secondary school.

“My husband told me about the case the day he arrested the accused. I shared it with my daughter, Nidhika, because she needs to know the kind of people that roam the streets,” she said.

The man arrested for the 3-year-old’s rape is already facing another rape charge. Police said Budhram Bavri was arrested on December 1, 2017, on the charges of raping a 10-year-old. He was in jail for the crime and was released on bail on March 12.

On May 2, he subjected the daughter of a brick kiln labourer to sexual assault.

The officer’s daughter wrote that she had confidence that he will gather all evidence to ensure death sentence for the man. Chauhan wrote: “Papa, I promise you that if you are able to get death sentence for the accused, I will agree with you on everything.”
