The staff of the Dhanbad Municipal Corporation on Saturday took part in a ‘bhoot bhagao’ (ward off evil spirit) havan to chase away the ‘ghost of a woman’ who according to them wanders on the top floor of the four-storey office building.

The ritual was organised by representatives of deputy mayor Eklavya Singh, after a section of the staff approached the Congress leader and complained of ghost sightings in the corporation building.

”We have called priests from outside the city who are performing puja to chase away the ghost,” said Raj Anand Singh, a representative of the mayor.

Around a week ago, rumours started doing the rounds that the ghost of a woman was often spotted on the top floor of the headquarters’ building during the nights, corporation officials said on the condition of anonymity. They added that it was claimed that guards on night-duty also complained of hearing a woman’s screams.

However, senior corporation officials, including mayor Chandra Shekhar Agrawal and town commissioner Rajiv Ranjan rubbished the rumours, officers familiar with the matter said.

However, a section of the staff approached the deputy mayor and requested him to intervene. Singh then urged the town commissioner to organise a ritual to ward off the ghost but his demand was rejected, officials said. But a religious ceremony was organised at the building although Singh himself did not take part in it. Agrawal and Ranjan refused to comment on the issue.
