Congress president Rahul Gandhi began a two-day visit to his Lok Sabha constituency Amethi on Monday – his first since taking over as his party’s chief last month.

He arrived at Lucknow’s Amausi airport on way to Amethi. Congress supporters set up posters and banners welcoming him at main crossings and other important points along the way to Amethi. He will travel through Rae Bareli, the Lok Sabha seat of his mother Sonia Gandhi who decided to retire from the post of AICC president.

Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) President Raj Babbar, former union ministers and party’s senior leaders welcomed him at the airport as workers raised slogans in his favour.

Rahul Gandhi will address a meeting at Salon in Rae Bareli where Salon Nagar Panchayat has organised a programme to greet him.

The Congress chief will thereafter go to Amethi and stay overnight at the Munshiganj guest house. On Tuesday he will visit Musafirkhana, Jayas and Jagdishpur and Mohanganj areas before leaving for New Delhi via Lucknow.

The Congress won just seven seats in the UP assembly elections earlier this year, its lowest ever in the state.
