Tripura administrative officer arrested over rape accusation

A Tripura administrative officer who had been accused of raping a Muslim woman has been arrested, 15 days after an FIR was lodged against him in the Karimganj district of Assam, a police official said.

Panna Ahmed, who was nabbed after a joint initiative by Tripura and Assam police, will be brought to Agartala on Wednesday to face trial.

The victim alleged that he raped and assaulted her at his residence after calling her to discuss the prospect of renting a room out to her on June 27.

An FIR was lodged at the West Agartala women’s police station against Ahmed under sections 342, 376, 506 of the IPC. He has since been suspended.

The victim’s husband is a lawyer practicing in the Sonamura court in Sepahijala district of the state.
