Who is TS Singh Deo, a ‘Maharaja’ who became Chhattisgarh's deputy CM?

Also known as modern-day Maharaja, Deo was first elected as the member of state's Legislative Assembly in 2008.

Senior Congress leader and Chhattisgarh health minister TS Singh Deo has been appointed as the state's deputy chief minister, party general-secretary KC Venugopal announced on Wednesday.

“INC President Sh. Mallikarjun Kharge ji has approved the proposal for appointment of Sh. TS Singh Deo ji as the Deputy Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh,” Venugopal said in a tweet.

5 things you need to know about TS Singh Deo:

1. Tribhuvaneshwar Saran Singh Deo, the titular Maharaja of Chhattisgarh's Surguja, was born on October 31, 1952.

2. Also known as modern-day Maharaja, Deo was first elected as a member of the state's legislative Assembly in 2008. Being from a royal family, he is the richest MLA of Chhattisgarh.

3. Currently an MLA from Ambikapur constituency, he has won the seat thrice since 2008, winning by a margin of 39,624 against his BJP opponent Anurag Singh Deo in the most recent 2018 elections. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the 4th Vidhan Sabha of Chhattisgarh.

4. When Congress came to power in 2018, Deo was among the frontrunners for the chief ministerial post but was pipped at the post by current chief minister Bhupesh Baghel. Deo was made a cabinet minister, holding five portfolios- Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education, 20 Point Program Implementation, Commercial Taxes and panchayat and rural development. Deo and Baghel have been engaged in a power tussle since then.

5. A passionate lover of adventurous sports, the 70-year-old politician embarked on an adrenaline-fueled skydiving adventure on his recent visit to Australia. When the aircraft ascended, Deo, showcased a different side of his personality as he prepared to freefall from the plane.
