As sparks flew between India and Australia at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday with Kuldeep Yadav dismantling the visitors with his record hat-trick, another mini battle took place in the commentary box when former cricketers Virender Sehwag and Sourav Ganguly came together for a session.
The recent controversy in Indian cricket sparked by Sehwag’s ‘no setting’ comments must have surprised his former teammates Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman — who were a part of the committee that helped the BCCI in selecting India’s next head coach.
Sehwag even reportedly had a two-hour long interview with his former teammates, after submitting a two-line resume.
However, among the three, it was Ganguly who had reacted over Sehwag’s comments and got embroiled in a controversy.
On Sunday, as Ganguly walked into the commentary box at the Eden Gardens, he found Sehwag in the room too. In a video released by Star Sports, the two former cricketers looked sharing the similar camaraderie with which they played their cricket.
Putting his hand around Sehwag’s neck in a friendly gesture, Ganguly introduced Sehwag to the viewers by saying, “My dear friend... who accuses us…”
Sehwag was not going to back down, as he immediately quipped, “I’m going to ask Dada the question. He didn’t give me setting only.”
The two burst into laughter before taking their respective seats alongside Laxman in the commentary box.
In a TV show, Sehwag had claimed having ‘no setting’ in the Indian cricket board cost him the coaching job, and said he was never in the readiness of applying for it as well. Sehwag had even pointed fingers at the role of Virat Kohli, after Ravi Shastri was eventually appointed for the role.
“Sehwag spoke foolishly (bokar moton boleche),” PTI quoted Ganguly as saying — a comment that he rubbished later on.
