Shreyas Iyer continued his magnificent form by smashing his second consecutive fifty off 44 balls as he put India on course for a series win against Sri Lanka in the deciding ODI at the ACA-VDCA stadium on Sunday.

Iyer, who had slammed a brilliant 88 off 70 balls and shared a 213-run stand with Rohit Sharma in Mohali, continued his great form after the Indian skipper was clean bowled by a googly from Akila Dananjaya for 7.

The 23-year-old right-hander started off cautiously but capitalised on a loose ball from Dananjaya to hit his first boundary to fine leg. Following the boundary, Iyer went after Angelo Mathews by hammering him for two boundaries in one over, one to deep mid wicket and another a magnificent extra cover drive.

On 25, Iyer edged left-arm orthodox bowler Sachith Pathirana to first slip but Mathews failed to latch on to a sharp catch. In the same over, the Mumbai batsman survived a close LBW appeal and was saved despite a review from the visitors. As he neared his fifty, Iyer upper-cut Nuwan Pradeep to third man and it just evaded Dananjaya’s dive to reach the boundary.

Iyer reached his landmark with a single and then followed it up by launching Pathirana over long on for his first six and by flaying a drive to sweeper cover. The youngster continued to bat without any trouble but in the 23rd over, the batsman miscued a pull shot off Thisara Perera and was caught at mid on by Suranga Lakmal.
