Thirteen children and their school teacher were killed today when a truck hit their van in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, police said.

Jodhpur city police chief Rajiv Dasot said 26 other children were seriously injured when the truck slammed into the school van with such force that the smaller vehicle was completely destroyed.

The killed and injured children were between six and 15 years of age, rescuers told AFP from nearby Barmer district where the accident occurred.

"The children escorted by a teacher were returning to their homes from school when the truck hit their vehicle," Dasot said and added his officers were trying to bring out bodies of the victims from the mangled van.
