The problem started when the Haryana government decided to get rid of manual disbursement of pensions in order to streamline the system. The government decided to open bank accounts for the pensioners so that the money could be transferred to the accounts directly.
“They first stopped our pensions and after that started opening bank accounts, the process which is yet to be completed”, said one of the agitating pensioners. “The data of the pensioners is being prepared at war footings and we hope to start disbursing the pensions by September 10,” said Ashok Khemka, state director general of Social Justice and Empowerment.
