EFFORTS HAVE begun at Allahabad University (AU) to enforce the minimum 75 per cent attendance condition for students to appear in the final examinations.

Under the new set-up— put in place following the decision of the AU Academic Council in their very first meeting on August 26 to make 75 per cent attendance mandatory for students to be eligible to appear in exams— Deans of each faculty will henceforth collect students' attendance registers from the heads of the departments as well as the co-ordinators of varsity centres and submit it to the Registrar every quarter.
A letter in this regard has been sent to all the Deans, Head of departments (HoDs) and co-ordinators of various centres by the AU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rajen Harshe personally informing them of the new system that will be effective from September 23, 2006.
The letter (374/VC-06) dated September 23, 2006 informs all the Deans, HoDs and Centre co-ordinators to maintain attendance registers of the students from the date of the notification itself. The VC has informed that henceforth the deans are expected to collect the attendance registers from the HoDs and co-ordinators of various centres every quarter and submit it to the Registrar.
VC, through the letter, has said that he would appreciate if the "request of 75 per cent mandatory attendance of the students asked by Academic Council is adhered to henceforth". While the letter cites the request of the academic council as the reason for the new order, sources say, Supreme Court's Friday ruling putting an upper age limit for contesting student union polls on student leaders is what actually prompted the varsity authorities to swing into action.
