Gopinathan Asari raped his neighbour on Thursday at Kilimanoor, 45 km from the capital city. He has been arrested.

A police official said the incident took place on Thursday around 11 a.m.

"Both the woman and the man are neighbours and when the incident took place there was no one in the woman's house. At noon, when her son came home he found his elderly mother lying in a pool of blood. She was hospitalised and we have arrested the man," said the official.

The accused was produced in court Friday. The woman is out of danger.

The man and woman had been reportedly close to each other for several years.
