EIGHT MEMBERS of a family committed suicide by consuming poison in Dateli village under Mitauli police station here on Sunday night. A nine-year-old girl of the family, the only survivor of the tragedy, Rajni, is struggling for life at the district hospital.
The deceased included the head of the family Ram Kishun (45), Ram Kali (65), Savitri (35), Vinay (21), Vineet (18), Chhotey Bhaiyya (13), Mukesh alias Golu (9) and Mohini (16). Now, the family is survived by three women — Renu who is married in Rajepura village, Puja who is living with Renu, and Rajni — who is undergoing treatment at the district hospital. Social defamation owing to illicit relations has been described as the reason for the suicide.
District magistrate SP Tripathi and SP Kheri Zaki Ahmad visited the village and took stock of the situation.
The villagers said Kishun, who had brought sulphus, persuaded all his family members to consume it. Soon after the family members had consumed the poison, a woman from the neighbourhood knocked on their door, seeking a matchbox. The woman was surprised when she found all the members of Kishun’s family were vomiting and writhing in pain. She immediately informed Ram Kishun’s younger brother, Jeewan Lal, about the incident. Jeewan arranged a tractor-trolley and tried to rush the ailing family members to the district hospital. While Vinay and Vineet died in the house itself, the other members of the famly, barring Rajni, died on the way to hospital.
Talking about the tragedy, the villagers said Turrey alias Ram Pal of the same village had spread a rumour that Ram Kishun’s daughter, Mohini, had an affair with her neighbour, Ashok.
This led to a serious dispute between Turrey and Ashok. An FIR was also lodged in this regard. However, the charges could not be established. On hearing this news, a frustrated Ram Kishun took this extreme step. Other villages told a different tale. They said that Ram Kishun’s wife had illicit relations with a villager, Anantu. This had led to serious tussle in the family. The villagers further said Ram Kishun and his children had objected to this relationship but to no avail. This relationship, the villagers said, had brought a lot of bad name to the family, forcing its members to commit suicide.
The Mitauli police decided to lodge a case against Ashok, Turrey and Anantu for provoking the family to take the extreme step. A large number of people flocked to Ram Kishun’s house in Dateli.
