A beautiful visit, says Bernadette
BERNADETTE CHIRAC, wife of French President Jacque Chirac, described her visit to the holy city of Varanasi on Monday as ?very beautiful?. Chirac arrived in the city in a special plane this afternoon.Accompanied with a strong contingent of French security personnel and senior officers, Chirac?s entourage drove to Sarnath from Babatpur airport amidst tight security.

Chirac arrived in the city in a special plane this afternoon.Accompanied with a strong contingent of French security personnel and senior officers, Chirac’s entourage drove to Sarnath from Babatpur airport amidst tight security.
Bernadette visited the Sarnath Stupa and museum for about half an hour. She later went to the famous Dashashwamedh ghat and enjoyed a boat ride, cruising from Rajendra Prasad Ghat to Manikarnika Ghat, going up to Harish Chandra Ghat.
“ The visit to Varanasi was beautiful”, 73-year-old Bernadette Chirac told the Hindustan Times at Rajendra Prasad Ghat. Varanasi SSP Navneet Sikera and District Magistrate Nitin Romesh Gokran accompanied her on the boat.
Clad in black trousers and a white shirt with a jacket, Chirac was overjoyed when she saw a long queue of people, mostly pilgrims, greeting her on the way back from the ghat. She even waved to an old man watching her from a window at Rajendra Prasad Ghat. The old man invited her inside, but she could not understand what he said.
