Mukhteswar is a tiny place known for the superb view it offers of the Himalayan peaks on a clear day. The peaks that you can see from here are Nanda Gunti, Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nandakot and Panch Chuli. The only establishment of any significance here is the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) and it employs about half the population. At 7,600 feet, Mukhteswar offers a nice climate with comfortable day temperatures even in peak summers while the nights are nippy. There isn’t a whole lot to do other than savour the beauty of the distant peaks and take long walks through pine-covered slopes.

A small ancient temple sitting atop a small hillock still attracts the religiously inclined. The other place that is recommended is a rock outcrop Chauli-ki-jali, which provides a panoramic view of the valley. Mukhteswar also boasts of a variety of wildlife including the Himalyan bear, which at times make their appearance during the winter when they are running low on food.

Mukhteswar is a pleasant experience and it is the all-pervading serenity that captivates you as you walk through even the busiest place in town – the local marketplace. The post-office is housed in quaint little houses that had a garden full of blooming roses even in the peak of summer. A pretty sight indeed, so much so that after years I actually mailed (not e-mailed) a letter. Pity they don’t sell picture postcards.

WHERE TO STAY
Well, the options here are fairly limited. The Government-run tourist rest house is the best bet. But accommodation is limited so if you plan to spend the night here it is advisable to book rooms in advance.

Tariff starts from Rs 1,100 – 1,500. This is situated at a good vantage point from where it is possible to see the peaks. There are a couple of small private hotel which didn’t really look very promising but tariff rates are really low at around Rs. 300. A for meals options are again limited to eating a simple meal in the market or ordering at the rest house.

How to get there

Bhimtal – Mukhteswar: 48 kilometre but don’t be mislead by the short

distance as it is mostly an uphill climb through mountain roads. Drive time is around one and half hours through

Ramgarh and Shyamkhet.
