District police officials said the boy - Krishna Gopal Hazarika - had brought the explosive device home in Kunhiyatoli village from the 9th Assam Police Battalion firing range nearby last Thursday.

The device exploded in the boy's house around 11.45 am as he tried prising it open.

"We have ordered an inquiry into the incident," a senior police officer said from district headquarters Nagaon.
