Later, he switched to Chemical Engineering and did his B Tech in the subject. But after passing the examination, he took up civil engineering as his profession. Today, he is the promoter of a prestigious construction company. Almost all big industries in and outside the country were constructed by his company. He told the Hindustan Times that prestigious thermal plants of the country were constructed by his company. According to him, his love for cement and concrete management led him to enter the construction business.
Software solutions
Dr Ajoy K Bose is another IITian who has earned a name for himself and also for the Institute and the nation by setting up a million-dollar software company in the USA.He is the chairman of his prestigious company ‘ATRENTA’ in USA, which manufactures various types of software, according to the need of the market.
Dr Bose had started the company with a total outlay of $ 1 lakh, which has now a turnover of Rs 500 crore per annum.Talking to the HT, Dr Bose said the company was manufacturing sophisticated microchips which contained more than one billion parts in a one by one centimeter chip. These chips were widely used by INTL, Samsung and other IT-based companies for their products.
Besides, the company was also producing other software for business applications covering marketing, sales and employees record keeping systems.
In the power sector
ASHOK KUMAR, an alumnus of the institute, is with Tata Power, Mumbai, and has the charge of providing uninterrupted power supply to the city.
Kumar said that Tatas were eager to set up their power units anywhere in the country, if they were asked to do so. He said, recently, the company has received offers from Jharkhand and Bangladesh for streamlining the power supply. A MoU has been signed with the Jharkhand Govt and if the political leadership remains unchanged, the Tatas would complete the project there. He said since setting up of power plants was a long-term venture, it needed a stable government to avoid confusions. He said the Tatas have not received any proposal from UP. However, if any proposal was received, the company would first ensure the stability of the government before taking a decision, he added.
Towards better sugar
SUNIL SINGHAL is another successful B Tech entrepreneur who had set up his company with Rs 4 lakh loan from the UP Financial Corporation in 1990. The company provides research in improving the quality of sugar. It also develops sophisticated plants and machines for ensuring qualitative and quantitative production.Singhal said that his company has proposed to enter into an agreement with IIT-K for developing new designs of the plant and machinery for producing quality sugar.
He said it was surprising that out of 500 odd sugar mills, only 12 sugar factories were producing good quality sugar.
He said he has so far developed three modern machine plants for sugar manufacturing and got their designs patented.
