The magical Himachal city of Shoghi is nestled between a few mountain ranges, and is so beautiful that I thought we’ve strayed into a postcard. My daughter’s summer holidays had started and I was looking out for a place where she could be occupied and I too could relax, did some reccee and decided to head up to Aamod at Shoghi.

A concept holiday is anyways one to be cherished forever and this resort seemed perfect, more so for an eco-tourist like me. I saw this as an opportunity to have a close-knit holiday. A rain shower welcomed us at the Kalka station, which was such a respite from the heat… and a great beginning to our holiday!

Basic adventure
On arrival, we were greeted with beautiful pinewood cottages which gave off a cheery atmosphere. There was a huge activity centre for the kids and lots of shady trees. After breakfast the next day, we started with the adventures. So we moved on to crossing the Burma Bridge, rope walking and flying fox.

A bit of exercise builds an appetite and when our tummy started rumbling we headed off to the colonial restaurant for a hearty lunch of Himachali madra and chawal, which ended on a sweet note with gur ke chawal, and life was bliss.

By the way there was no sign of tiredness at all (blame the mountain air). Evening was spent playing scrabble at the recreational centre and we slept early to wake up for our next adventure, which was a trek to rock climbing and rappelling. Trust me nothing spells adventure like starting the day by rappelling down a cliff, especially if you’ve never rappelled before.

One by one we strapped in and lowered ourselves over the edge. We ended up at the bottom of the mountain, where we had started the day nearly four hours earlier, tired, scraped and immensely gleeful.

Desi girls
The foodie that I am, I couldn’t resist the village tour and meal experience at a local home. Our culinary sojourn started with a cup of tea made with freshly drawn milk. We slid into the kitchen and it was fun trying our hand at making the rotis on the chullah. We were fed the most amazing fresh and organic (they grow their vegetables without any chemicals) dinner, and we ate as if there was no tomorrow.

However the best part was the dessert — pure ghee and shakar! After this experience it comes as no surprise that I’ll be planning more such holidays in the time to come.
