Anti-rabies vaccine now available in the district
After a gap of over three months the anti-rabies vaccine is finally available in the district. The vaccine will be administered intradermal to give quick relief to the dog bite cases.
After a gap of over three months the anti-rabies vaccine is finally available in the district. The vaccine will be administered intradermal to give quick relief to the dog bite cases.
The order to administer anti-rabies vaccine intradermal was recently issued by the State Health Directorate. The directorate has issued directions to administer vaccine intradermal with special insulin injections.
The directorate has also ordered to stop the intramuscular procedure of giving anti-rabies vaccine, said CMO Dr Shantimal Singhavi.
Dr Singhavi said the anti-rabies vaccine is also available at the community and primary health centres. The vaccine was normally administered intramuscular. But with the fresh directions of the State Health Directorate the vaccine would now be administered intradermal, he added.
"Only .1 millilitre vaccine will be used in this procedure and its effect will be quick in comparison to intramuscular procedure. The insulin injections will be used for the procedure," he added.
Dr Singhavi said normally the first dose of anti-rabies vaccine was given on the zero day.
"It is followed by another dose on the third day. The remaining doses are given on the seventh and 28th day. The booster doses are also given in the first and fifth year to maximise the effect of the vaccine," he further informed.
He said a special drive was launched in China and Thailand to control increasing number of rabies or hydrophobia cases in these countries.
However the sources at the district health department informed that at an average only five viols of anti-rabies vaccine were sent to every CHC and PHC during the visit of CM's task force. "There were also confidential instructions to use this vaccine only in special cases," further informed the source.
