Ashok Gehlot was elected Chief Minister of Rajasthan after the Congress swept 1998 assembly elections under his leadership. Gehlot was the unanimous choice in the faction ridden Rajasthan Congress unit at that time.
Regarded as a wily politician, he has tried hard to break the image of a traditional political leader from north India and has also been successful to a great extent.
A willy politician, Gehlot has survived serious rebellion from within his party, mainly because of his progressive outlook and liberal policies.
Propelled to the state politics very late in his career, Gehlot comes with vast experience in governence and as an administrator.
He had also been part and parcel of several ministries at the Centre and has held key portfolios during the regimes of Rajiv Gandhi and PV Narasimha Rao.
He had been elected to the Lok Sabha for five terms from Rajasthan and was elected to the Rajasthan state assembly for the first time during the by-elections after taking over as the state chief minister.
As an active student leader, Ashok Gehlot was elected as president of Rajasthan unit of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) (1974-1979). He was later appointed president of the District Congress Committee, Jodhpur (1979-82) and served as general secretary of the party state unit twice.
He was appointed as the President of Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee for the first time in September, 1985. He was again elected as President of Pradesh Congress Committee in December, 1994 and for the third time in June,1997.
