A huge banner, showing slain LTTE chief Velupillai Prabakharan's photograph erected by activists of pro-Ealam outfits near the Periyar EVR's statue here, hurt the sentiments of some Congress leaders who today demanded the police to remove it.
Former Union Minister E V K S Elangovan, a relative of Periyar along with Vidiyal S Sekar, MLA, Kangeyam and other Congress members today visited the spot to garland the statue of Periyar on his 130th birth anniversary.
Noticing the former LTTE chief's picture, erected by Periyar Dravida Kazhagam and Tamil Desa Pothuudamai Katchi, Elangovan raised objection and demanded the police to remove the same.
Elangovan said placing of the portrait of a person belonging to a banned organisation is an offence and the persons responsible for placing it should be booked under National Security Act.
Elangovan and other Congress workers staged a 'road roko' in the area.
Later police removed the banner, following which Elangovan and others garlanded the statue and paid their tributes.
