Benegal, Vatsyayan, Bhartia in Rajya Sabha

President APJ Abdul Kalam has nominated to the Rajya Sabha, noted filmmaker Shyam Benegal, eminent name in arts and culture Dr Kapila Vatsyayan and vice-chairperson of HT Media Limited and editorial director of Hindustan Times Shobhana Bhartia.

President APJ Abdul Kalam has nominated to the Rajya Sabha, noted filmmaker Shyam Benegal, eminent name in arts and culture Dr Kapila Vatsyayan and vice-chairperson of HT Media Limited and editorial director of Hindustan Times Shobhana Bhartia.

An official announcement here on Thursday night said the nominations filled up vacancies caused by retiring members.

With this, the Rajya Sabha has two more vacancies, one for a full six-year tenure and the other a three-and-a-half-year term. Lata Mangeshkar, Cho Ramaswamy, Nanaji Deshmukh and Fali S Nariman had retired, while the fifth vacancy came with the death of Dr Vidya Niwas Misra in a road accident last February.

Under Article 80(3), the President nominates to the Upper House 12 persons with "special knowledge or practical experience" in literature, science, art and social service.
