Bhadohi fake encounter case; 9 policemen sent to jail

Nearly a decade after four persons were killed in an alleged fake encounter in adjoining Bhadohi district, nine policemen wanted in the case surrendered before the local court which remanded them to judicial custody.

Chief Judicial Magistrate, Bhadohi, Intakhab Alam on Tuesday rejected the bail application of the nine policemen and sent them to judicial custody for 14 days.

Twenty-one other policemen involved in the fake encounter in Bhadohi on October 17, 1999 are still on the run and the court directed the police to arrest them.

After filing of the chargesheet in the case on May 1, 2007, the court had issued summons to all the 30 accused policemen but they failed to appear before it.

The policemen who surrendered included Ramnarain Singh Yadav, Vijay Bahadur Singh, Ramjanma Bharati, Ravindra Kumar Tiwari, Ram Awatar Yadav, Kailashnath Singh, Ramjot Singh, Satyanaraya Tiwari and Sarfuddin

According to the prosecution, the policemen had allegedly killed the four alleged criminals in cold blood. Father of one of victims Omprakash Yadav alias Munna had alleged that his son was killed brutally by the police.

The police had on the said date picked up the victims including Omprakash and Banke Rai from their residence while Rajnath was picked up from his hotel room.

After public outrage, the case was referred to the crime branch by the then state government for investigation which said the encounter was fake.
