The BJYM activists torched posters and banners of the movie at Gawdolia area where the movie is being screened in two theatres. They raised slogans against Khan for his statements against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Sardar Sarovar Dam.

At least 100 activists staged a protest demonstration outside a theatre in Gawdolia area, torching banners and posters. This panicked cinema goers who preferred to stay put rather than watch the movie.

The movie was stopped for 15 minutes till the protesters dispersed.A strong police force was deployed at the remaining theatres screening Fanaa.

“We will continue our protests,” Secretary of Varanasi wing of BJYM Vikas Chaudhary told HT on phone, adding, ‘approval will be sought from senior leaders for continuation of protests against screening of Fanaa’.

He said the administration assured them the movie would be withdrawn from all the three theatres due to protests. However, this claim was debunked by a senior police officer. “The activists came, raised slogans and left. The police had made adequate security arrangements for the movie goers and theatres,” Circle Officer, Dashaswmedh police station S Tiwari told HT.

“A massive police force has been deployed at our theatre since early morning with even senior police officers supervising the security,” Nagindra Vajpayee, theatre manager at Nadesar areas told HT, adding, ‘we have not seen any protest, may be due to the police force deployed’.

Fanaa is a Kashmiri word which means ‘go to hell’ or ‘vanish’, ‘get lost’.
