POSSIBILITY OF another bloody clash looms large in Ghazipur district following political rivalry between wives of two musclemen which claimed the lives of three persons outside Karanda block in Ghazipur district on Tuesday evening.

Newly elected block pramukh Sushila Singh, who survived an attack on her life on Tuesday,  had defeated her nearest rival Neelam Singh by a margin of three votes in the recent block pramukh election. Neelam is the wife of mafia Bheem Singh, linked to jailed MLA Mukhtar Ansari.

Tension prevails in Karanda following the death of two persons in gang war and killing of an assailant by police during an encounter soon after the incident on Tuesday evening. Heavy police force has been deployed in the area to avoid any further untoward incident. The cause of the bloody clash is stated to be the fallout of the recent block pramukh election.

There was a meeting of Kshetra Panchayat members in Karanda block on Tuesday. Sushila Singh, along with her husband, Dhananjay Singh, had come to attend the meeting. After the meeting ended at 5.15 pm, Dhananjay told his younger brother to drop his wife home in Lakhanchandpur village.

As soon as their Tata Safari came out of the block office, five miscreants hurled a powerful bomb on the vehicle, blowing off the left portion. Immediately after the explosion, Vinod Singh got out of the car and challenged the attackers but he was shot dead.

Dhananjay, who was in the block office, heard the sound of the blast and ran to the spot with his armed supporters who chased the attackers. One of the assailants was shot dead in cross firing between the two groups while the rest fled in the fields.

The police swung into action and the cops gunned down an assailant near Manpur village in an encounter and recovered a .9 mm pistol. Led by SP N Ravindran, the police launched a massive manhunt to nab the other three miscreants but they could not be traced. The identity of the assailants killed has not been established yet. A named FIR against three persons, including Bheem Singh, for conspiracy and another FIR against two unidentified persons have been lodged.

It may be noted that four persons had been killed during the panchayat by-election in Reotipur block in Ghazipur on March 1 and seven persons, including BJP MLA Krishnanand Rai had been killed in Mohammadabad in Ghazipur on November 29, last year.
