Sources said the new aircraft would be specially configured by Boeing, and is likely to be equipped with an intensive care unit for medical emergencies.

It would have around 30 business class and 150 economy class seats, besides a lounge and state-of-the-art cabin for VVIPs on-board.

The national carrier has proposed to replace the double deck aircraft with the sleek B777, ordered way back in 2005.

AI is yet to take delivery of three B777s from this order. Sources said the proposal has already been discussed with other agencies and departments, including the Special Protection Group.

“All agencies have cleared it. The final clearance will be given by the committee of secretaries, which will meet soon,” the official said.
