The claymore mine attack was in the district of Amparai where the Special Task Force commandos had captured a dozen bases from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) after a two-week offensive, a police official said.

He said an STF inspector, two constables and a paramilitary homeguard were wounded in the blast.

The attack came as the military said it captured the main bastion of the Tamil Tigers in the adjoining district of Batticaloa.
