The BRO is liable to pay Rs 35 crores to owners of the Reasi-Pouni stretch. The amount has been forwarded to the deputy commissioner, who would place the amount at the disposal of the collector, land acquisition. The BRO has said that the remaining amount would be released shortly.

The BRO was forced to pay after the district administration last month initiated criminal proceedings against it under Section 133 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The director general had, in an undertaking, submitted to the chief secretary that it had committed an immediate payment of Rs 35 crore. The district administration hopes the compensation would be a relief to thousands of families awaiting compensation for land and houses for years.
