Cabinet approves 6th pay commission

The panel will decide on possible salary increases for central govt employees.

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the setting up of a panel which will decide possible salary increases for thousands of central government employees, a minister said.

"It has been approved," Rural Development Minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh told reporters.

No details were immediately available.

A similar pay panel proposed a significant increase in salaries of Government staff in 1997, which widened the fiscal deficits of the central and state governments.
