They organised corner meetings and arranged for Iftar parties to mobilise the support of the minority community. National general secretary of the Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal and senior Samajwadi Party leader Ashok Lohia said the SP was able to woo traders because of its policies.
Earlier, the traders were the traditional vote banks of the BJP, he said. He termed Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav as the messiah of traders.He further said that the BJP- ruled states implemented the VAT system but the SP-led UP Government took a firm stand and did not implement it.
He said it was Yadav who abolished the chungi system.
Lohia appealed to the people to ensure the victory of the SP candidate for mayoral post Sitaram Jaiswal to transform UP into Uttam Pradesh.
Meanwhile, Apna Dal candidate Mohd Arif Bhakol said that he would bring bring transparency in the municipal corporation system. He further said that to ensure drinking water supply and providing streetlight would be his priority.
Rashtriya Lok Dal candidate for Mayoral post Janardhan Singh said he was in election fray against the communal forces who used to disturb the peace of the city.
