Talking to Hindustan Times, Khurshid said Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav should clarify why he was publicly supporting Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
He admitted that he was the advocate of SIMI activists’ case in the Supreme Court, but termed it as a legal case within the framework of the Indian Constitution. Launching his offensive against the Samajwadi Party-led State government, Khurshid said that lawlessness prevailed in Uttam Pradesh of Mulayam Singh where mafiosi were ruling, people were in state of fear, caste based crimes had become routine affair.
Khurshid addressed a public meeting at Paniara in Maharajganj district of the division and called upon the people to bring back Congress into the power as Uttar Pradesh was lagging far behind in the race of development.
Earlier, Congress workers welcomed Khurshid on his arrival in Gorakhpur at Sahjanwa, Seehapar and Transport Nagar and handed him a memorandum.
Weavers’ community leader Qamruzzama Ansari drew the attention of the State Congress president to the weavers’ community plight and demanded a special package for them from the Union government. Congress leader Diwaker Singh, Chaudhary Najmuddin, Haji Shamim also welcomed him.
A delegation of unemployed Muallim-e-Urdu graduate also welcomed Khurshid at Jama Masjid at Gorakhnath and demanded the recruitment of Muallim-e-Urdu as Urdu teachers in government primary schools.
