The university mountaineering centre in the BHU had planned the ‘Heritage and Rock Climbing’ programme at Sneh Fall and Pandav Fall (Khajuraho), Madhya Pradesh for female students of Banaras Hindu University and affiliated colleges from April 4 to April 11 this year but the authorities concerned had to postpone the climbing expedition as only four girl students got themselves registered for it.
As part of the expedition, it was planned that the candidates would be given theoretical background of the rocks, their nature and problems in rock climbing etc. The authorities concerned had also decided to teach techniques of rock climbing, trekking and camping etc to the candidates.
But due to the poor response of girl students of BHU and affiliated colleges such as Vasant Kanya Mahavidyalaya (Kamachcha), Basanta College of Women (Rajghat), Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Arya Mahila Degree College (Chetganj) and DAV Degree College (Ausanganj), the proposed expedition could not take off.
It may be noted that the famous Khajuraho is situated between Chhatarpur and Panna districts of Madhya Pradesh. This historical and religious place is famous for Hindu temples constructed by Chandel kings during the 10th and 11th centuries.
The last date for the submission of application forms was April 2 but sources said that only four girls were registered by then. Therefore, the expedition had to be postponed. It was decided that only 20 girls in the age group of 18 to 35 years would be given the chance to participate in the proposed expedition.
Interestingly, when contacted the Dean of Students in BHU Prof VK Kumra expressed ignorance about the cancellation of the proposed expedition. Incharge of Adventure Sports in BHU Sports Board Dr RN Singh said that the climbing expedition had to be postponed due to poor registration of girl students.
