Among the debts, the university has to pay Rs 1 crore as electricity dues, Rs 21 crore arrears to employees, and pension to retired employees. The university has not received and additional grant from the government for the past several years. Besides the grant was also suspended by a government order some seven years ago in 1998.
Meanwhile, the Chief Minister has made several announcements for releasing fresh grants for Horticulture College (Rs 9.61 crore) Forest College (Rs 16.08 crore), Beautification (Rs 2.05 crore), Dairy Technology College (Rs 16.08 crore), Fisheries College (Rs 11.98 crore) and Advance Research Center (Rs 4.90 crore). However, the Chief Minister did not give any assurance to release funds for meeting the old debts of the university.
The University authorities are hopeful that they might get an additional grant of Rs 10 crore towards the debt account in the budget. But nothing is certain as yet. Meetings with officials of the Ministry of Finance have not proved to be very encouraging or fruitful.
Meanwhile, the yearlong centenary celebrations planned by the university remain non-starters for want of funds. The University is trying hard to get funds from any source.
