Upset over the award of medals to 'undeserving', students of the CMP Degree College held a demonstration inside the college premises on Wednesday. The students took out a procession shouting anti-college administration slogans, gheraoed the Principal and the Proctor and later locked their and the Dean's offices in protest.

During the demonstration, the students alleged that two students were invited by the college administration to attend the college foundation day function on February 26 and receive medals meant for meritorious students but failed to award them the medals.

They also alleged that a student who had topped at the graduation level was denied a medal and another student was presented there as having scored the maximum marks in his place and awarded a medal deliberately by the college administration. During the protest, the students also demanded that a proctor of the girls' section be sacked immediately.

General secretary of the CMP Degree College Students Union Anurag Shukla said that during the foundation day function, the college administration had invited graduation final year student Abhishek Verma and first year student Shivam Rathore to collect their medals. "However, they were not presented the medals.

Similarly, a final year student Santosh Kumar who topped the college by scoring 872 marks was not presented the medal and another student who had scored just 864 marks was awarded the medal. These developments were protested by the students during the function itself and the students had submitted a memorandum to the college principal in this regard on that very day. The principal had promised to present the medals to the deserving students within the next 24 hours," he said.

As the principal failed to keep his promise and even did not award the medals till date, the students decided to launch an agitation in protest, he added.

On being contacted, vice-principal Dr Manjul Bhatnagar said that though Santosh Kumar has scored maximum marks, he had submitted an application for improvement for it. "And as per the rules, only students who score the maximum marks in first go can be awarded the medals, so the other student was awarded the medal," she said.

Dean RBL Srivastava denied having any knowledge about the invitations sent to the two students to collect the medals but who were not awarded the medals.

On the issue of removing the proctor of the girls' section, College Chief Proctor Satyamwada Singh informed that only the principal has the authority to appoint and remove a teacher from the post of proctor and that she will talk to him in this regard. She also informed that she had asked the students to wait for 48 hours for the principal's verdict.
