AG Noorani contradicts himself when he blames the media for abdicating their duty in Jessica Lall’s case (Lost innocence, June 27). His analysis is focused on the media’s interference with a fair trial. Responsibility for a fair trial does not rest with the media alone. It was right in focusing on the acquittal of all the accused, which led to a public outrage and reopening of the case.

Great achievement
LN Mittal deserves praise for his success in taking over Arcelor despite stiff resistance (Steel wheels, June 27). He has achieved his goal of consolidation to own the biggest steel producing company in the world. It remains to be seen how he counters the wide fluctuation in steel prices.

Apropos of the report DU cut-off nightmare for many (June 26), the plight of the not-so-brilliant students is anyone’s guess. The overemphasis on performance in written exams has been the bane of the Indian education system for long. Studies show that written exams, as practised in India, are not a true indicator of a student’s ability.

Apropos of the report Failed plan back on DDA table (June 27), the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) should entrust parks to private agencies for maintenance, as it has failed to do this on its own.
