It may sound strange but the police believe that bicycles are a better and faster mode of transport to negotiate the congested and crowded lanes of the NCR township.
A part of a pilot project, eight bicycles were distributed on Monday in four police station areas — Old Faridabad, City Ballabgarh, Kotwali and Central — to keep a check on criminal activities in NCR’s oldest satellite township.
“The idea behind the introduction of bicycles is to strengthen our police force, especially policemen who patrol the congested lanes,” Commissioner of Police SS Kapur said.
“This facility can be extended to other police stations if we get the desired results in these four police stations,” he said.
The policemen on bicycles will carry handcuffs and walky-talkies with them when they patrol the congested lanes.
Officials said that bicycles would serve a double purpose: They would be able to catch criminals without making noise and easily access the congested lanes. They said in congested lanes, neither PCR vans nor motorcycles could ply freely and bicycles were the best option.
The bicycles are being fitted with rechargeable lights and the policemen will have to wear helmets as well.
“I received two bicycles on Monday,” Vijay Kumar, station house officer of Old Faridabad said, adding, “beat cops in congested areas have started patrolling on them”. We want to make patrolling a 24-hour practice,” he added .
