WHY ARE cops reluctant to give copy of the statement to the Ashiana rape victim’s father? He has been visiting the police station regularly since Saturday but to no avail.
He went to the Ashiana police station on Thursday too asking for the copy. But, the station officer (SO) KK Yadav asked him to come after three days as the official who had recorded his statement was away. Officiating CO of Sarojininagar RP Singh Sengar had recorded statement of the girl’s father and took his thumb impression on the paper. Sengar had then ignored request of the man when he had asked for the copy of the statement.
Talking to the HT Lucknow Live victim’s father said that he went to the police station in the morning and asked for the copy. The SO, however, replied that the CO Sengar was away and he could only provide him the same. The SO further assured the man that he would help him in providing the copy of the statement after three days.
On Monday, the CO had claimed that he had merely inquired about the money offered to the victim’s father. He, however, had not explained asto why he recorded the statement again when his senior official (SP East) already had taken the same version of the man earlier.
Moreover, the victim’s father raised suspicion over role of the police in taking his thumb impression frequently.
‘We want to see her’
WOMEN ORGANISATIONS want to meet the Ashiana rape victim recovering in the protection home to make sure that the girl was not facing any threats.
Madhu Garg of AIDWA says, “We want to meet her and see how she is doing mentally and physically. We can’t trust the police on this after the way they have handled the case. We can’t just believe in what they say. We want to meet the girl personally and assess her condition.”
Rooprekha Verma, former V-C LU says, “We want to go and give her courage and tell her that a lot of people are there to support her and she need not fear. We want to tell her that we are there for her.”
Meanwhile, the signature campaign gained momentum. On Thursday evening when the campaign reached the Charbagh Reilway Station. Deendayal, a coolie said, “The rapists should be hanged to death the day they commit this crime. They have no right to live after they rape a girl.”
Launched primarily by All India Democratic Women’s Association and Saajhi Duniya the signature campaign is doing a good job of sensitizing people and spreading awareness amongst the masses. Eva, a young girl says, “If the police are not doing anything against such criminals then the people of our city should get together and do their job.
The next station is Sessions Court on May 6 at 11:30 am, the day of the first hearing of the case.
