Earlier, the victim’s parents had also been allegedly burnt and killed by one of his five cousins in a gruesome incident in Nai Basti area on February 2 in Meerut, police officials said.

On Saturday night, Yogesh Singh had just returned from work when he heard a knock on the door. As he opened the door, he was shot in the head at close range by two men who fled immediately, police said.

Singh succumbed to his head-injury at MMG district hospital. Police have traced the origin of the incident to a land-dispute between the victim’s family and his five-cousins over a 150 sq mtrs of land in Meerut.

“Jhabar Singh, one of the victim’s cousins, was arrested as an accused in the killing of his parents and is presently lodged at Meerut prison. As the victim was complainant in the case, the remaining four cousins were after his life,” Superintendent of Police (SP) A.K. Vijeta said.

On Saturday, the victim’s brother, Sanjay Singh, lodged an FIR and named his four cousins as the alleged killers.

Police have arrested Tarif Singh, one of the accused, and are looking for the other three.
