Sashi Sekhar, in his mid 30s, was shot late on Monday near a railway crossing at Biharsharief town, about 100 km from Patna, Nalanda district Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar said.

Sekhar was posted at the Asthawan police station in the district.

"He was gunned down when he was returning from Biharsharief to Asthawan police station in an Ambassador car," Kumar said. Criminals intercepted his vehicle and gunned him down.

Last month, an inspector in-charge of the Rahui police station in Nalanda district was shot dead by criminals when the cop was on a routine night patrol.
